so i thought i'd post a little about my experiences with both, cause i'm bored at work and yeah

computer specs:
- MacBook, wk 33, 2.0GHz, 2.0GB, 80GB

Parallels(P):
- luckily i got a copy for free. i tried P first, because i didnt want to have to shut down to run XP. so the program itself loaded fine, i set up the virtual desktop to what i wanted and i tried to install XP. every time i tried it would get to the Windows XP setup screen and say "39 minutes" remaining but it would take HOURS for it to move to 38 minutes and so on. after 6 hrs of it just sitting there at 36 minutes i finally decided to stop trying.
- one thing i noticed is that when using the screen animation to swap from the virtual desktop to the main OS X desktop, the screen would move, then go black, pause, then go back to the screen it was supposed to be showing. it would do this every time no matter what.
- so, unable to run XP setup (using even 1GB of dedicated mem) i wiped Parallels from my MacBook and moved on . . . .

Boot Camp(BC):
- installed it yesterday. setup was a breeze. nothing too complicated at all. (even for the Mac-newb that i am). got XP running, installed the drivers that BC burned onto the cd for me.
- runs fast, havent had a problem yet
- only thing i had to deal with was figuring out what the Ctrl, Alt, Option, etc keys did in XP vs OSX
- i really wish i didnt have to shut down to use XP, but i'll survive. i basically just wanted to be able to use Excel, Word and Power Point in XP b/c OSX is too slow for my impatientness.

that's about it. BootCamp wins.

discuss.

That's odd, I had no trouble installing xp with parallels. Can you be more specific about your settings?

this thread is about 2 applications: Parallels and BootCamp
i didnt really want the thread to be about XP, just P and BC and how good/bad the applications are.

i went thru the custom installation. the only thing i changed other than the names of the partition and what not, was the amount of memory i wanted to let Parallels use. i started with 512 and kept trying larger numbers until i hit 1GB and it was still taking hours.

The sole purpose of both Parallels and Boot Camp is to run other operating systems. ALL discussion of other operating systems and the software you use to make them run goes in the Alternative OS forum.
