hi all. so i have 2 macs (pb and imac), each has music on it that frequently gets out of sync (i.e. while traveling, i put music on my pb, rate it and create some playlists; but none of this is on my imac, where i try to keep everything). what i would like to do it be able to merge my itunes libraries so that i can rate and create playlists once on either machine and then push the music, ratings, playlists, etc. to the other machine so that it is merged with what is already there.

obviously, transfering the music files is easy, so that is not an issue. my question revolves entirely around the itunes db that keeps all the other information like ratings and playlists and how to get them synced between my two machines. any idea how to do this? thanks.

You could put your iTunes music folder on a network drive and have both macs use that as their iTunes Library folder. Although I think only one mac could access the folder at a time, and you would have to initially manually combine the two music folders into one. After that, since both computers would be using the same folder, both computers would see the changes.

I have two macs, and I dont sync them, but rather clone them. I use my Powermac as my primary computer and periodically clone the powermac's iTunes folder and copy it over to my iBook. It keeps my music constant on both machines and also serves as a backup.

I know both solutions aren't exactly what you are looking for; perhaps someone else has a more elegant solution.

Doesn't iTunes 7 allow for this? Maybe it needs an iPod to make it work... On the network drive item, you can have the same folders used by as many computers as you like without issue (but taking a network drive out on the road may not always be practical).

i am not keen on the network drive idea simply because my pb is on the road with me and that would nuke its ability to access the library.

does itunes 7 do this? is there documentation on it or anything; i haven't seen/heard anything about this, but that would be awesome.

what about that app called "itunes library manager v5.0"? i was checking it out, but didn't see any merge/sync features. has anyone used it before? any comments if you have? thanks.

syncOtunes is supposed to be able to sync libraries, but the software seems to still be in beta.
