Quicktime sees a 2 hour long AVI file as 20 minutes?

I have a 2 hour long 1080p HD AVI file. It's AVI and DTS video with AC3 audio. In VLC, the entire length is there, but in Quicktime, it's only 20 minutes long. How can this be?
Thanks.

How big is the file?
I'm going to guess 12GB.

quicktime might be missing a codec to properly decode the file. VLC doesn't rely on quicktime to decode video.

Yeah, it's 12GB. But why would quicktime play the first 20 minutes flawlessly? and then just Not Have the rest of the video there? Do you think maybe the codec changes at that point?

Codec might be an issue, but QuickTime Player also has trouble with files over 2GB in size.
Yes, it is a very stupid bug.

Yeah, that's how I determined the file was 12GB in size. If 20 min = 2GB, 1hr = 6GB, 2hr = 12GB.

It's not files over 2 GB, it's AVI files over 2 GB. The AVI 1.0 spec doesn't allow files over 2 GB. Try passing it through to mov with VLC.

Couldn't I drop it into iMovie and then export it into mpeg4? Or Final Cut Pro?
edit: VLC Unexpectedly quits when I try to do it in there.

Apple apps will all use the QT engine to open the file (so they won't work).
What did you do in VLC, and what did the crash log say?
Also, what do you mean by DTS video? I thought DTS was an audio format.

This is the info of the file:
Movie: Fellowship of the Ring
Version: Special Extended Edition
Part: There are two parts: this is Part A
Runtime: 1 hour 45 minutes 36 seconds
Resolution: 1920x800
Aspect ratio: 2.40:1 OAR
Interlaced or Progressive: Progressive - like 1080p
Format: Xvid within an AVI container
Audio: AC3 (448kbps Dolby Digital EX 5.1) and DTS (768kbps DTS ES 6.1)
Synched: Yes, audio is in sync throughout movie
Filesize: 7.9GB approx
File format: 79 part RAR
PAR2s: 5.5% PAR2s will follow
Provenance:
- 85% video is sourced from the exceptional 23GB 1080i .ts file capped by ABSiNTH and previously posted to this group several times
- 15% video is upconverted from PAL format (576p) DVD
- audio is from the R1 Extended Edition DVD (thanks jamesuk)
edit: This if the first half of the movie. The second half is 11.33GB. But this one, being 7.9GB still has the same problem.
