We have an imac ~2003, 800MHZ Power PC G4 512 MB of memory running OS X version 10.2.8

Problem is after I made about 4 backup disks of pic's in iphoto it decided it does not want to complete the burn!

Should I try re-installing iphoto from the disk that came with the computer and is there a way to do this without jeopardizing my pictures?
Thanks,
K

1) Do you have iPhoto on the originial iLife disk? Re-install it, it will not (OK, OK, "should not") jeopardize your pictures.

2) Does your burner work in other applications?

iphoto is the only ap I've ever used the burner for. Unless there is a burning program that came with this version of OSX that i don't know about there is no other way to test it.
I'll try to back up pics to another place on the hard drive. Maybe this is a dumb question but how do i re-install iphoto from the disk without doing the whole operating system?
Thanks,
K

Test the burner with Burn.
Make a folder, fill it with pictures (650 megs, max).
Pop in a blank CD, 10.2 will tell you that the disk is unreadable (!) and then mount it on your desktop.
Copy the picture folder into the blank CD, go to File, down to Burn.

I think iPhoto is one of those integrated into the System programs that makes you re-install everything. No harm done as long as you click Options-->Preserve User. You will install the version that is on your CD, so you will need to run Software Update to bring it up to 10.2.8.

I tried again. I don't get an unreadable message however. It just processes the images (copying, preparing burn, etc.) but when it gets to the "Burning CD" it ejects the CD and says burn unsuccessful or somthing like that.

What did you mean... mount it to desktop?

Is there a backup utility w/this version of OS X ? I'm ready to reinstall everything but our pictures are the only thing on the computer(other than emails) we don't want to lose.
Thanks,
K

Try to do this in the Finder, not iPhoto. I'm trying to see if it is a problem specific to iPhoto or if the drive hard ware or system software is bad. If the drive is working correctly it will give you a blank CD icon on your desktop. Copy your picture folder to it, go to File --> Burn Disk. If that fails then the next step is to reinstall OS X.

Even if you have to re-istall OS X you will not lose your pictures, Options, Preserve User, etc. Just as long as you don't reformat!

If that fails, then the drive is physically dead.
