Any tips on getting spell check to work if it's not coming up. thanks.

Did you select "Check Spelling While Typing" in the Spelling menu? If you're using Safari Nightly builds, those seem to forget that the setting is on.

should I uninstall safari? what about current bookmarks?

Try this: either right click if you have such a mouse, or "control" click in a text field in Safari. A contextual menu will (should) pop up. Select "Spelling" --> "Check Spelling as You Type".

When you say that "none of the spelling features work anymore" do you mean in all programs? Just Safari? Even if you have to re-install Safari your bookmarks live in your Home Folder safe and sound.
