The files will all preview correctly, but as soon as i import in, the image will try and render, but it will not because it says it's an unsupported file format.
How do i get around this? what else do I need to download? I've had aperture 1.0 for the longest (just recently got notified to update to 1.5) time using my old digicam, but never used RAW format. The extension of my raw files are CR2.
Can anyone help? thanx!

i don't have the XTi, but if Aperture doesn't support the RAW files, you can use the Adobe DNG Converter for the time being.
Aperture will be able to read the DNG files.

I think Aperture only supports DNG files from cameras it supports natively. I'm sure the new Rebel will be added to the next OS X update (the OS actually adds raw support -- not Aperture).

Can you preview the images with Preview.app? If it doesn't work there, it won't work in Aperture.
My understanding was that Mac OS X 10.4.8 does not support the Canon 400D/XTi. If true, then expect to see it by 10.4.9. I know that doesn't help you now, but in the meantime you could try Canon Digital Photo Professional 2.2 which apparently supports the 400D/XTi.
EDIT:
That's just the updater, not the full DPP program. Is DPP free? I can't remember.

Thanks everyone, I was under the impression that Aperture 1.5 did in fact support raw because of the following line from apple.com/aperture/
-- Aperture 1.5 also provides RAW support for more than 50 camera models — from Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, and other leading manufacturers. --
Yes, the Preview.app does give me a small thumbnail, but so does Aperture 1.5
I'll stick to The Raw editor canon came with since it was free.

No I meant does Preview.app display full sized pictures of your files?

Aperture does support raw, just not from the new Rebel. It will with 10.4.9.
Here's the list of supported cameras http://www.apple.com/aperture/raw/cameras.html

Yup. My Canon 20D's CR2 RAW images have been supported for a very long time now.
Apple usually is a couple of months behind for new cameras (unfortunately). You'll get support, but it might not be until November or December when 10.4.9 is released.
OTOH, very old lower end cameras will never get integrated RAW support. My old Olympus point and shoots' RAW images are not supported natively in OS X. That doesn't bother me though, since I only shoot JPEGs with those anyway.

It's ridiculous that Apple even has to support each and every camera model for RAW support. And it is foreseeable that at some point in the future RAW files will become unreadable if the camera model is out of the market for some time. Camera makers really need to start to settle on DNG.

Having a bazillion RAW formats is irritating, but why would the camera makers want to settle on a little used Adobe format, when they have complete control over their own, which is much more widely used anyway?
DNG is already dead. Somebody just forgot to tell Adobe.

Each of the "bazillion" RAW formats is much more widely used as DNG? I don't think so. Maybe the camera makers don't have much of an incentive to use DNG, but why would a customer purchase a camera that takes pictures in a format that might be unreadable in the foreseeable future? Those who do are up to a nasty surprise in maybe 10 or 15 years.

I would say there are more users of NEF than there is of DNG.
I would say there are more users of CR2 than there is of DNG.
Furthermore, just about any important 3rd party app out there that supports DNG also supports both NEF and CR2.
While I worry about the issue of RAW readability in the future, I certainly don't think DNG is the answer. DNG is a dead format already, and I think it would be a major mistake for anyone to switch to it at this point. I definitely wouldn't recommend a Nikon user to switch his entire set of images to DNG for example, because working with DNG files can mean dealing with certain restrictions, and it can be argued that DNG will be even less supported in the future than it is now.
If you are really anal though, you could maintain copies of your RAW files as both the original RAW and DNG. However, I for one don't bother with DNG at all, cuz I think it's a waste of time. Maybe 5 years from now when someone tells me that Canon .CR2 is EOL'd and new programs won't read it, I'll do a bulk conversion to whatever "open" format there is at that time. However, we'll see, 5 years from now. I guarantee you it won't be what DNG is now though.
