OpenMark 1.60
OpenMark is an OpenGL benchmark for Mac OS X.
OpenMark tests the raw speed of the video card drawing a variable (automatic or user-defined) number of triangles and generates a screenshot and a text report of any step.
If you run the predefined benchmark, it generates an increasing number of triangles until the frame rate drops below 10 fps. Once it hits 9 fps, the bench stops, and you get a set score. This is the example on their web page:

My scores:

Cube G4 1.7 GHz with ATI Rage 128 Pro 16 MB 1360x768x32: 373
iMac C2D 2.33 with GeForce 7600GT 256 MB, 1920x1200x32: 13686 <--Schweet!

Hmm... Interesting. I note that the Mac Pro Quad 2.66 here is slower than the MBP CD 2.16.

It's been said that in Aperture, an iMac CD with X1600 is noticeably faster than a Mac Pro with 7300GT, and this test seems to reflect this. (I also have heard that the 24" iMac C2D with 7600GT is faster than the iMac CD with X1600 in Aperture. While I have not directly compared the two machines, I note that I got 13686 on my 7600GT iMac in this test.)

I'm not sure if the 2560x1600 screen rez on your Mac Pro makes a significant difference, but FWIW I get the exact same score with my G5 iMac whether I run the test with my screen rez set to 1680x1050 or if I run it with it set to 1024x768.

Not that surprising, considering the Radeon 9800 is quite a fast GPU.

Yeah, it seems that not only is this OpenGL bench is a limited test of the GPU, judging by our results it doesn't test the CPU that much either. (The latter is a good thing though for a GPU test.)

OTOH, gaming relies very heavily on the CPU as well, and the G4 1.33 just doesn't cut it.

Pretty good.

I wonder what the clock is for the the X1600 in the iMac Core 2 Duo (or even iMac Core Duo). I betcha it's faster (either GPU or memory, or both) than the MacBook Pro. (Both machines use GDDR3.)

Nvidia has always been MUCH more openGL friendly than ATI. Makes me wonder why Apple uses ATI at all.

Unsurprising the MacBook fairs poorly in this test. It's basically entirely vertex and lighting as far as I can tell, so the GPU isn't even being used.

So, I'm not convinced the resolution that this app lists means anything for the benchmark. It seems that the app is changing the rez when it is running the benchmark anyway, although I don't know how to confirm what rez it's using. Furthermore, setting my G5 iMac's screen to 1680x1050 vs. 1024x768 doesn't make any difference in the score. (The results the test provides though aren't that fine grained. Two computers got 8719, and I don't think there's any way of getting 8720 or 8716 or whatever.)

It seems to me that anyone getting a 24" for anything 3D related should definitely consider the 7600GT. Of course, the 7300GT is great for basic OS X 3D stuff and any apps that don't utilize the GPU much. ie. Adobe Creative Suite 2 will run great on the base 24", but for Motion and Aperture, the upgrade to the 7600GT is basically mandatory. It was an easy decision for me though, because for some reason the upgrade in Canada only costs CAD$90 (US$80). In the US it's US$125, or 56% more. Strange.

Do you mean "CPU isn't even being used"? If so, I do note that the iMac C2D X1600 seems to do a lot better than the MBP CD X1600, but I wonder if most of that difference is due to the GPU's clock speed etc. though (assuming there is a difference).

My comment referred specifically to the MacBook, which has no GPU transform and lighting capabilities.

That could be either the Radeon 9000 or the Radeon 9600. You can find out which in the Graphics/Displays section of System Profiler.

I'm going to wait until the next MacPro update and hope the high end is something other than an ATI card or specialized like the Quattro. I believe it should happen, being that ATI on Intel should not happen after this year.

What's wrong with an ATI card? The X1900 is damn fast.

It is, but it also has some problems with XP under BootCamp from what I have read (some games don't display everything properly). I also have reservations over driver support for the card since ATI is AMD-only soon.

Your reasoning here doesn't really make sense. The ATI X1900 is already in Intel Macs, with good Mac drivers.

My main concern is how support will be a year from now. Will Apple / ATI care enough to release a driver update for the X1900 should little glitches pop up? Major issues will be dealt with I'm sure, but for small things I'd think Apple / Nvidia would be more inclined to do so in such a situation.
To be determined later.

hmm.... mine doesnt show the score in the windowed mode.... and when i run the benchmark my screen turns off 'cuz my monitor sucks...

-also-

when i take a screenshot while it is doing the benchmark, the screenshot goes blank.

i dont suppose it supports my video card (sig) i think mine is a ati rage pro something-or-other...

?:
i think that the FPS dipped a bit while taking the shot, because it is normally 130 FPS.

WTF?!?!?!?!! It doesnt tell me a score!!!!

I concur. The app calls the 9550 an ATi Radeon 9600 XT for some reason. Perhaps they are similar.

8520 on my MBP 2.0GHz, with 128MB Radeon X1600. I was amazed at how many triangles that thing produced! About 8.5 million!

For those mystified by non-results: try starting the benchmark first. (Openmark -> Run Benchmark.)

eMac 1GHz (ATI Graphics), ATI Radeon 7500: 460.
