I must be missing something or maybe it is just an annoying feature of Safari. When I want to save an image in Safari, I right click on it but I don't see an option for save as or something similar. I only have to save to downloads or save to iphoto library. What if I want to save it somewhere else?

Drag it there. Or, drag it to a photo editor or viewer icon in the Dock.

Right click like normal and then press option. The choice should change to "Save Image As..." which will let you select a download location for it.
