Time to get serious about a text editor for working with php/mysql backends (newbie, so mainly template work. Need to learn PHP/MySQL) anyways, my friends says DW has the best Syntax coloring (tried BBEdit, Textmate, etc). This statement has stopped me from buying BBEdit (if I had known it was $125 and not $199 I would have bought it years ago). Anyone have a language module for BBEdit that does better Syntax coloring then the built in PHP module? Textmate doesn't talk to me so used to BBEdit. I also use Transmit as my SFTP client (god I love Transmit). So what editor should I look at or where can I get a full Syntax coloring module for BBEdit?

Thanks
P.S. How do I open files in BBEdit from the Terminal when on my webserver (SSH) I assume it only works locally.

SlickEdit has very good PHP support BUT under OS X, it runs as an X11 application and not as a truely integrated OS X application. This makes its usage under OS X a bit awkward.

I have used SlickEdit for years under Windows to build and maintain PHP/MySQL websites and have been very happy with it. If/when SlickEdit becomes a true OS X application, I will probably purchase a copy to go along with my Windows/Linux licenses.

Give TextMate another try. I use it with CyberDuck (a free ftp/sftp client) to edit files remotely.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

First I want a native OS X app second I already use the best SFTP client around (Transmit and have bought it). I tried Textmate and not sure yet.

Any PHP coders get a Langauge module for BBEdit that gives more colors for Syntax coloring then the default?

I'll add my vote in for skEdit. I have been using it for over a year and it's been a life saver! If you register - get on the beta list and you'll get your hands on some of the new stuff the author is working on.

It has built in FTP but I prefer using it with Transmit - which I use to remotely edit most of the file I work on.

TextMate is native, it was built from the ground up based on OS X technologies. There has never been an OS 9 version. I didn't mean to suggest you switch sftp client (I chose CyberDuck, because it was free and does what I need). All I meant to say is that I use that sftp app to edit files remotely, I'm sure you can do the same thing via Transmit.

If you don't like the TextMate, that's another thing. However, you should have a look at the videos (e. g. Ruby On Rails which is extremely impressive, ditto for the TeX video casts) to get to know all the features you can use. I use it on a daily basis for html, wml and (most importantly) LaTeX and don't want to miss it.

No I was referring to SlickEdit which needs to run in X11, not Textmate.
