Before someone jumps on me for thinking I am pirating movies - I am not. Here is the deal. I have a Linux based DVR system. It has a 500 gig hard drive. What I do is when I buy a movie, I rip it and then convert it to DIVX. I put in on the DVR for future viewing.

In windows I use AnyDVD with DVD Shrink (this makes them 4.7 gigs) -- I store this on my NAS as a backup. I then use another program to make it into DIVX (DIVX create).

What's comparable on the Mac? Thanks!!

HandBrake. It makes MPEG-4 H.264, but that's at least as good as DivX and it is an official standard format that plays on any platform without problems.

You might need to use MacTheRipper for the ripping-part if the DVD is copy protected. In some countries this is illegal even for private/fair use.
