I used Apple Backup software for about a year and set schedules to backup all of my purchased music (among other things) to my external hard drive. I just recently decided to NOT renew .Mac and also purchased a new computer. Without being a .Mac member and downloading Backup again, is there any way I can get my files out of the backup archives on my external drive?

The Apple Backup application restores backups even when you are not a member. If you don't have it any more you might need to sign up for the 60 days free trial to download it again.

You could also control-click on the backup archives and select "show package contents" from the contextual menu and then mount the disk image that is inside and copy your stuff out manually. But that's not really convenient.
