When I boot my iBook OS X 10.3.9 with a Repair Utility CD made with BootCD 0.6.4, DiskUtility shows 2 (invisble?) files <2048 > .ramdisk.inkernel> and <20480>
2048> .ramdisk.inkernel
Apple disk image Media (Disk description)
Disk image (Connection bus)
ram: /2048 (Disk imagePath)
1024.0Kb (1,048,576 Bytes) (Total capacity)
Read/Write (Disk write status)
.ramdisk.inkernel (MountPoint)
Mac OS Extended (Format)
Yes (Permission Enable)
27 (number of folder)
1024.0 KB (capacity)
404.0 KB (Available)
620.0 KB (Used)
65 (Number of files)
20480>
Apple read/write Media (Disk description)
Disk image (Connection bus)
ram: /20480 (Disk imagePath)
10Mb (Total capacity)
Read/Write (Disk write status)
Did someone knows about it and what they are ? Did those file necessary to the CD create by BootCD or it is a bug ?

It is as it should be.
BootCD makes a little bitty 10 meg ram disk to load a very minimal system. But it does make a system that is user configurable for the purposes of the repair session. Something that a burned-in system on the CD can't do.

Thank you. I was a bit worry since this Boot CD doesn't work as well as I hoped. I explain, I make it on my iMac OS X 10.3.9 and he refuse to boot the iMac but boot well my iBook OS X 10.3.9 too.

Something happened with one of the updates for 10.3.x that broke BootCD, and I'm not sure how to fix it since my Mac is not running 10.3.x anymore. I'm getting rather frustrated with BootCD, which has become far more difficult to maintain than it used to be, and I've been considering dropping it.

Oh God !... I hope is just a consideration took in a disagreeable time. Your work in Mac 's world is essential to all.

Well, I can't get it to work right with the latest versions of Tiger. After one or other of the software updates, even Apple's System Image Utility tool doesn't work, so I'm not sure what I can do. The hdik command-line tool is not working without having a bunch of other stuff running which I need hdik to be able to start on a read-only disc - a chicken-and-egg problem. For all I know, this could be the same problem with the updates to 10.3.x...
If the OS ever gets to the point where System Image Utility works again, I might make a simplified version of BootCD that works similarly to the way it does, if I'm able to make it work without having to dedicate my entire life to it.

Mmmm... In certain way, your answer let me think there should be some hope because if, as you say < even Apple's System Image Utility tool doesn't work > then we must believe that Apple, in some way, will (should) fix it given to you a possible new approach.
I hope not saying something stupid, I just want to believe you will be able to continue your essential contribution to all mac-users.
Many Thanks anyway.

10.5.0 will need to work on a boot CD, for them to be able to make a working install DVD. 10.5.1 and up will need to work as a boot CD on Intel, but not on PPC, since there will never be a new PPC Mac that needs to include a working 10.5.x disc with it, and thus the 10.5.0 DVD will be good enough for all PPC users. That's the problem.
Even if 10.5.0 comes out and I can make a working BootCD for it, it could very easily break in a software update, just like it did for 10.4.x.

Every time I see a BootCD thread I feel prodded to put my 2cents worth in just for information.
I dug out an old CD-RW I had installed BootCD (0.6.4 build 8211) on while booting from OSX.4.2 and tried it out. My Combo drive had problems seeing it as a mountable CD...sometimes it would mount and other times it wouldn't. However, it mounted okay in my Super Drive and I could boot from it...it took the usual 10 minutes or so and all the utilities I had installed on it worked okay...DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Drive10, and DiskUtilities from OSX.3.9, OSX.4.6, and OSX.4.7.
My Mac is a 1.25GHz(Single CPU) MDD running OSX.4.8 normally.

I think we should just forget the unsupported RAM disk boot process and move on to something different. How about creating a bootable USB drive with some of your favorite apps?
Here's a link for Boot OS X86 from a Pendrive. Admittedly, there are a lot of little details here, but if someone would write a simple script/installer that would take your install disk or system install and create a minimum bootable USB drive for x86 and/or PPC with your favorite programs, I'd love it.
regards,
MAJ
