Hi All,

I was wondering if this was normal behaviour: I've got some applications (though not all) that are waiting until they're frontmost before doing certain things.

e.g. Photoshop CS2 and opening files. I chose to open 20 files photoshop, and was doing a little surfing while they opened. I then went to photoshop to discover that none had opened, they only started to open when I made photoshop frontmost.

I've had other apps do similar things.

Anyone else noticed this?

That doesn't seem right at all!
If I launch Photoshop and tell it to batch process 20 pictures from my digital camera it does so while I launch Mail and Mail downloads my latest messages while I post a comment in macnn on Firefox...In fact, that is exactly what I am doing now!
What OS, what Mac, how much ram?

Hi Sherman, thanks for replying.

I'm running OSX 10.4.7 on a dual 2.0GHz G5 with 3Gb of RAM (and sufficient HD space).

Yeah, this is a strange problem. I get something similar with any non-html media in web pages (like video embedded in a page, or a Flash movie: nothing happens unless I make the app frontmost, and then things load and continue to load if I hide the app).

This happens once in while to me too, but only with Photoshop (CS). It could be either opening files or saving files. If I switch back through command-tab it still just sits there doing nothing, I have to click to the finder or another program and then back and it will start working. I've noticed this behavior for a very long time, but can't remember when it started (since I started using OSX?).
