Hi,

Let me preface my question by saying that I AM framiliar with using VNC. I've used VNC on Solaris for years. I know about tunneling through SSH, although I rarely do it. I'm comfortable with poking the necessary holes in the router, etc.

OK, so here is my issue.

I have numerous Macs: a B&W G3 (@parent's), QuickSilver G4 (@apartment), MacMini G4(@parent's), iBook G4(mobile). All running OS X 10.4.8. I can launch the third party "OS X VNC" server app and connect to it using Chicken of the VNC without any problems. However this assumes I remembered to launch OSXVNC before I left the house.

Thus I would like to use the built-in VNC server in Mac OS X 10.4 available in the system preferences under Apple Remote Desktop. I seem to remember that I actually did use this for awhile, but maybe I'm inventing memories. Anyway, when I turn it on now and then try to connect with Chicken of the VNC I always immediately get a Connection Terminated error: "Zlib inflate error: invalid code lengths set". I get this regardless of which machine I am on and which machine I am trying to connect to, however when I use OSXVNC as the server I have no problems.

I can even vaguely recall seeing a workaround or something about this before. Like instructions saying to do something in the encodings pane of the connection profiles window of Chicken of the VNC. But I've googled like mad and I can't find any info on how to resolve this issue now. If anyone can be of any assistance and point me to how to get COTVNC and the built-in ARD server playing together nicely I would very much appreciate it!

Thanks!

Sorry, I can't answer your specific question, but here is another approach (using COTVNC and OSXVNC) that might solve your problem.

So that your target computers are always ready, set OSXVNC to start automatically at each startup and to accept local connections only. Then use SSH with local port forwarding to log into the computer. This thread will give you the specifics, albeit with more details than you need.
