Hi

I'm using Snapz Pro X to capture tutorials. I'm wondering how to open these files in Final Cut Express for further editing. A full screen capture on my monitor produces a 1680 x 1050 movie, which obviously isn't going to sit well in FCE at DV resolution.

I captured a fixed size movie at 720 x 576 in the corner of my monitor and it imported/exported well using FCE. How do people get around this resolution incompatibility? Is there some scaling trick I can use?

Thanks
Ben

Why don't you set your monitor to a lower resolution before capturing? Even if you get the screencapture movie scaled down to DV, you won't be able to see anything because it will all be too small.

Thanks. Looks like I'll need to work on a different machine, because the aspect ratio of my monitor won't scale to DV.

Assuming that you have FCE HD (and Quicktime Pro), you have a couple of options:

1) you could capture at 720x1280 at 30fps encoding with Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). That is HDV 720p30, which FCE recognises. You might have to load it into QT Pro and export it again to make sure the frame rate is right - I've read about some issues with that. Hopefully that will be big enough to see what is going on for most applications you might capture.

2) you could capture at full screen resolution, and then export from QT Pro as HD 1080i50 or 1080i60 before editing. That will be much more demanding to edit on your system than 720p, but you will get the full screen resolution to play with.

Hope that helps (and is not too late!)
