I downloaded the program MainMenu (recommended on macnn.com) and I ran the first maintenance task. Now, not only will my operating system not launch, the hard drive is not even recognized when I try and reinstall the OS or run any other disk repair programs. Does anyone have some suggestions? I am using a Powerbook G4 Titanium that was running Mac OS 10.4.8.
Thanks.

Your drive was damaged. Have you tried Disk Warrior?

I have tried the latest version. It hangs when it tries to find the disk to repair.
I don't understand how a program can do something like this to a hard drive. I could understand if it just wouldn't load the OS and needed to be reinstalled but how can it be possible that my drive is unrecognizable by any program?

I'd like to add that I now believe my hard drive is hosed but I'd like some confirmation. When I ran System Profiler from the OS install DVD, there is "No information found" under the Serial-ATA tab. As well, I think the hard drive may be making some funky noises though I'm not sure about that.
Can the the running of MainMenu and this problem actually be related or is just an unlikely coincidence?

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm really desparate and don't want to pay for a replacement drive if I don't have to.

It does look like you will need to get your hard drive replaced. Have you run the Apple Hardware Test yet? The AHT will confirm if you will need to replace the hard drive.

I do not have the original disks. How can I run that test?

My sympathies. Assuming you've tried Apple's DiskUtility repair disk function, you could download SmartReporter and at least it'll tell you whether the drive is indeed failing. Good luck...

How can I do that if I can't even turn the computer on?

i would take it into an apple store and talk to a mac genius. they should be able to run a hardware test from one of their cd's.
also, its probably a coincidence that your hd went out when you ran menu meters. i'ved used it on 3 different machines and have not had a problem. anyhow...hope you are successful in fixing it.
