I'd like to create an mp3 streaming server on my computer that easy to configure but also runs in the background. What's the best software solution? I'm on an intel mac.

Apple - QuickTime - QuickTime Broadcaster

I've only toyed around with it once and never got to the heart of it. Seemed fairly straight forward, though.

One simple way is to create .m3u files, which will allow a client to download an mp3 from a remote location, and begin playing it once it has loaded enough.

For a true broadcast experience, you could use Quicktime/Darwin Streaming Server, or Icecast.

You can create iTunes compatible shares for your LAN on a Unix/Linux server too, if that is more what you are looking for.

meh.. i dont used specialized software..

i just use a websrever (im using lighttpd, but you can use apache) put a symbolic link to my music folder, and make the link a dot-file, so only people that know the address can get to it.

You could also just disable directory indexing so that people can't read the contents of the directory containing your mp3 files. This would accomplish exactly the same effect, no?

Don't you need OS X Server?

Unless things have changed, you can run Darwin Streaming Server on anything, which is the exact same product minus the pretty OS X GUI (it uses a web interface GUI instead).
