New to the mac os, so bear with me. In windows xp, the default picture viewer has the ability to go to the next picture in the folder (or go back) via little arrows on the bottom. Is there a similar image viewer for the Mac, where if I open one picture in a folder full of pics, i can just click next or go back?

Thanks!!

Preview can do it, and so can the Finder's slideshow.

In either case, select all the photos in the Finder, and then either double-click them to open them in Preview (they'll all open in one window), or right-click on them and pick Slideshow. (I prefer the Finder slideshow.)

That's not the same thing. The parent means that he can click any photo in a folder, and then simply use the arrow keys to go back and forth from that photo.

IMO, this is something that Preview is sorely lacking.

Preview so needs working on I reckon... but let's not go there now. Here's a couple of happy freebies, but only the first one is Universal, still chugging along on a G4 here...

SimpleView - as the name suggests basic, but my default viewer. You can click-through going forward, but to go back you need the down cursor (up goes forward natch!) Side-click (if you can) to rotate either way. There is a basic slideshow and random, loop etc in the prefs. You set your own background colour (mine is black) so no desktop or anything either side to take the eye from the pic, essential for a decent look I'd say. Also shows movies. Cannot send to trash from here. Universal.
SimpleView 3.0 - MacUpdate

Slide Freebie - used this as my default in OS9 days, this one has a control panel on screen for all the usual functions. Background blacked out as above. Can trash from here. Quite an impressive feature array but it's not got round to doing the Intel thang yet...
Slide Freebie 2.5b11 - VersionTracker

Both the above open folders and sub-folders as well as single or selected images by dropping on dock icon.

Personally, I think that is a stupid idea. I just use Preview.

I don't get what's lacking. I can use the arrow keys in Preview.

The "problem" is that you have to open the image first to be able to view it in Preview. I assume that the feature people want here is for the image viewer to be able to go to the next image without having to first open it. There is something already built in to OS X to let you do this and it is called column view.

There is column view and there is the built-in slide-show in Finder.

You're missing the point.

The point is that if you have some number of images in a folder, along with tons of other junk, you can double-click a single image to open it, and then use the arrow keys to view all of the other images in the folder.

There is no need to select all of the images before you open them, which can be especially annoying if you have other files in your folder, or even multiple image types.

In Windows, it's a very nice shortcut and turns out to be very handy. I was disappointed to find that Preview doesn't do it. :-(

You can drag any folder on the Preview icon in the Dock while holding down command-option and it will open all images within that folder. I don't know what could be easier than that.

That works, and it's neat.

But Windows' method is still faster and requires less thinking. Apple should implement it into Preview as a preference for those who like the behaviour (and I'm sure many do).

Thanks! Jview and Xee work great. I am surprised none of them have a 'print' feature though. Or am I missing something?

Xee uses OpenGL to display images, which might explain why it doesn't offer printing. It's got the open in editor menu item that can be used to pass the image off to Preview or something for printing though.
