What I mean is, I have a 1400MB .avi file on my computer which I want to burn as data to a CD. However, a CD is only 700MB. Can I break the .avi file into two files and burn them to CD?

Explicit doesn't seem to want to split my .avi files.

First time I tried, it split a file into about an 0.1 to 99.9 ratio, even though it was set to 50-50.

Now every time I click "Split" it just opens the "Open" dialog box.

What's up?

I think it might be a incompatibility problem with Handbrake. When I try to set the split time I get an error message which reads:

"Position is out of bounds. 2970 seconds exceeds file length of 0 seconds."

Any other freeware .avi splitter for Mac? (Looks like ffmpegX only splits mpeg files).

ffmpegX also splits avi files, but you'll have to do some experimenting to get an even-size split as it only seems to split by time. It's under "Filters", and despite it saying "preview", you can use the split-button to do it.

What I usually do is open the avi in QT(Pro/Amateur) and go to the middle, select around half and paste into a new movie and see how much it is. Adjust 'til it's right and see at what time it is. Then loading into ffmpegX and enter that time and split.

For archival purposes / possible future searches, here's the solution to the apparent Handbrake/Explicit compatibility issue if anyone runs into it in future.

The AVI file is listed as length 00:00:00!

Some AVI files have damaged headers. Explicit cannot split files with damaged headers, per se, but you can still press the Split button to have Explicit fix the header -- this will churn out two files, one small file containing only the header and another file containing the actual video, which should then be splittable.
Note to self: Always read files that are entitled "Read Me".
