I looked in every place to change the pref for selecting email but can't seem to find the magic door. Do you know it? Thanks.

I am assuming that you want to change your default e-mail application. Go into the Mail preferences (in the "Mail window"). Chose the "general" tab. There should be an option to select your default email reader.

CJ: ......ahhhh, but that's in MAIL itself. I don't want MAIL to come up when I hit a mail link when I'm using Safari. I use mostly Google Mail but have two others, one for trash and another fastmail.fm based un UK (good) for business. I'd like Google Mail to pop up when I hit a mail link but Safari doesn't seem willing to go outside the company. I did set the pref in MAIL to Google's Notifier to see what happens... Thanks.

I currently have Google Notifier selected. It should open a gmail window for you.

Also, you set the default browser in Safari's preferences. It is kind of weird why there is no system preference that takes care of mail and browser prefs.

It is odd, but I think that because Safari and Mail are Apple's babies, you have to use them to set the preferred browser and email program. I remember the good old days when System Preferences were used to control system preferences...
