Before the 10.4.7 update (or 10.4.8) I was able to use Ctrl+two finger scroll in firefox to increase/decrease the size of text on a web page. However, either after 10.4.7 or 10.4.8 update this has changed and the whole screen zooms in with the Ctrl+2finger scroll. This means that OS X is using that shortcut for that feature. Is there any way I can still use the trackpad for text zoom in firefox? Yes, I'm lazy and its too much work to take my fingers from the trackpad to where the + or - buttons are for text zoom

Try turning off the zooming in the System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Mouse pane to see if FF regains control:

Thanks a bunch. That got it solved.

That adds another reason to dislike OS X as they don't warn during updates that they are doing some changes that might change application behaviour! And another reason to love Debian's apt-listchanges
