I'm a little frustrated here, hopefully someone can give me a hand.

I have Rogers high speed (Canadian provider, cable hi speed) at home and for the last few months have been using their webmail option while at work. I put the computer to sleep every morning before leaving for work. Obviously my mail isn't being downloaded.

When at work, I send and receive emails all day. Delete what i don't need, leave the rest on the server. When i get home the computer turns on and downloads all of the emails in my inbox on the server. Perfect. When i get to work the next day my inbox is completely clear since the emails were deleted from the server when they got downloaded in Mail at home. I start with a clean slate every day. In the preferences for my Rogers account i have a box checked that basically says "remove messages from server after download" or something like that. Simple.

So I just got a .mac email account over the weekend. I set it up as my main account on Mail and will slowly stop using the Rogers account. Yesterday I accumilated about 30 messages in my .mac account using the web interface all day. I get home and all my mail gets downloaded. I deleted what i didn't need, placed some messages into subfolders and was done. I have my syncing preferences for .mac set to "automatic" and the boxes checked to sync my mail. In the preferences for that account, there is no option to "remove messages from server after download".

This morning when i accessed my webmail all 30 messages were still there.

I know i am probably missing something here, please enlighten me. Ideally i would love to either have my Mail at home completely synced with the online webmail, including subfolders. So what i see at home is ALWAYS what i see online. My mail folder is 350MB at home so i know this is doable. If that isn't possible, thats fine, but i would like it to function just like the Rogers system did. All or nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your Rogers account appears to be using the POP system - basically, all messages are stored locally (on your hard drive) and removed from the server.

Apple's .mac mail system by default uses IMAP, which keeps messages on the server, instead of locally, so you always have access to all your mail wherever you are. Mail is also cached locally on your hard drive (though you can change this option in Mail) to speed searching and so you can access your mail should your machine not have an active internet connection.

If you change your .mac account settings in Mail to use POP instead of IMAP, it'll work the way your previous system did.

Personally, I like to have all my mail available to me from whatever computer I'm using (laptop, desktop or PC at work).

Edit: re-reading your post, it sounds like perhaps some email that was supposed to be deleted didn't get removed when looking via the web interface. Not sure why. I've not had this problem (messages deleted are deleted everywhere), and for the most part I'm using default settings for .mac mail accounts.

.Mac is IMAP which means everything is stored on the server. Your views from both machines should be identical.
