Suddenly the icon for .avi files has gone from the usual blue Quicktime film clip icon (below left) to a plain white rectangle (below right).

Can anyone tell me why?

Do they still open by default in QT? First step is to find out if the problem is with the OS (associating the files with QT) or with QT (maybe it's tiff image icon file got damaged or something).

Click on the file. Hit Command-i (or File>Get Info), in Open With section, select Quicktime (or whatever app you want to open AVIs in). Hit Change All.
