Hi - I am interested in converting tapes to mp3 using an iMac. I am told Garage Band can do the job. I was using Adobe Audition on my PC. Besides simply recording tapes to digital format I would like to do basic sound editing (deleting sections, enhancing sound, reducing hiss). Does anyone know if garageband does this or a more powerful MAC software?
Thanks,
Jared

I used Soundtrack Pro but I think it only comes with Final Cut Studio. I converted some tapes to MP3 with it and was easy!

Is it possible to just buy Final Cut Studio and not the entire Soundtrack Pro? Soundtrack pro is $1200 and I will only be using the final cut studio portion of the software. Thanks.

Soundtrack Pro is part of the Final Cut Suite and cannot be purchased separately.
I've done some MP3 encoding before, but I used Sound Studio (it came preinstalled on my old iBook), and used iTunes to make the MP3. I believe that Quicktime player can also record audio.

Other option: Bias Peak + SoundSoap (for the tape hiss).

I was trying to do exactly the same thing as you, converting tapes to cd and mp3s. I tried everything and had probs with garageband, soundtrack pro etc, can't remember specifically what the probs were but couldn't get any of it to work properly but that is quite likely my lack of knowledge. I also tried using Sound Studio which as someone else suggested is free, I think it worked for me but also had some issues with it, once again can't remember what they were exactly, but seeing as it is free maybe give that a try first.
In the end I used CD Spin doctor (part of Toast which I had to buy) and it worked like a dream. You can select part of the track, and then you can reduce hiss, static, etc if you want to, I had some badly damaged tapes that I cleaned up quite nicely in CD Spin doctor . I think CD spin doctor saves your files as aiff files then you drag them into itunes to convert to mp3.
