I have a movie i ripped using mac the ripper and it is 7. something gb in size. will ffmpeg be suitable to convert the movie to less than 4.7gb so it fits on a dvd? Or do i need something else. If so what is a free app to use?

ffmpeg can do it. ffmpegX (the GUI for OS X) is probably the easiest way to do it. DVD2OneX is another option, but that one isn't free.

ok i cant even priview these videos it is in like 3 or 4 different formats they are vob,ifo,bup can ffmpegx convert these?

Oh and can i just burn these straight to dvds like they are or do they have to be converted?

.vob is the actual video file, the rest is a bunch of info. I think that ffmpegx wants you to drop the entire video_ts folder onto it. You can't burn them straight to a DVD, you have to make an image file of the correct format first, but most apps will do that for you as well.
