Drag it into the applications folder. That's it. If you want it on the bottom bar, you can drag from the applications folder to the bar and you'll get a link there. you can then drag the safari icon from the bottom bar into the trash.

I did this a couple days ago. I also recently switched back to mac from Windows and so far the learning curve has not been that bad. Took a while to figure out things like installing applications.

Dude,

The thing that looks like a cd drive is a drive image. Open it up and drag the firefox icon into the apps folder.

Get it?

yeah, a lot of programs you'll download for mac come as images (.dmg files).. just double-click the .dmg, drag the program icon into 'applications' in a finder window, then delete the file from your desktop after ejecting it (after double-clicking a file like this, it will be mounted. to unmount it, drag it down to where the trash usually is, which will become an eject symbol instead. after you have ejected it, you can delete it).

imagine it like a setup.exe file on windows, you can't delete it before installing! hope this helps

Welcome and I hope we get your question answered quickly!

A couple of things to note: while the title of your thread is somewhat useful, it should say what kind of help you're asking for. Something like "Firefox Install Help" would have been much better. Second, proofread your posts; if you look at your original post, can YOU tell what you were talking about? It's pretty disconnected, and that makes it hard for us to figure out what your issue is and how to help you. This lack of clarity is exactly why the first response was "What?" - the user that posted it was very confused about what you wanted.

And FYI, questions about ALL applications go in the Applications forum... I'm moving it there now. And by the way, there's a sticky thread there about installing and uninstalling Mac apps; it's worth reading, especially if you're new to Macs, because while it's much simpler than with PCs, it can get a little confusing when you're used to the hoops Windows puts us through.

the problem remains as described (it's not a problem at all).. the firefox icon on your desktop is what is known as a .dmg file, which is what you needed to install from. what error do you get when you try to trash it?

it may be that you've double-clicked the dmg file then double-clicked the firefox inside it, which would have opened the file within the dmg. You will not be able to delete the dmg because the file within it is in use. quit firefox so it is no longer in use. you then need to re-open the dmg file on your desktop (double-click it), drag the file from inside this dmg into a finder window (click on 'finder' in your dock down the bottom left, press 'apple-n', drag firefox icon into 'applications' link), then you'll be able to open it from your applications menu instead of your desktop

The disk image (the file with a ".dmg" extension) for Firefox (like many Mac programs) has a custom icon-it looks like an external drive with the Firefox logo on it. The install procedure for such programs is that you double click on the disk image (which mounts the volume on the file system) and then drag the program icon to your Applications folder in Finder. I think that Firefox even tells you to do this. Once you have dragged that icon to Applications, you UNmount the disk image by clicking the "eject" button in finder, and then drag the disk image to the Trash. So much simpler than all the crap you go through with a Windows program-even Firefox for Windows.

If you think you've already done this, just open Applications and see if Firefox is there. If it is, you're safe to eject and delete the disk image. If not, see above. Of course you should quit Firefox before you start with any of the above.

To be honest, I fumbled around for a while with putting Firefox on my wife's iBook until I read the Uninstalling Applications sticky at the top of this forum. Mindwaves gives a very straightforward and understandable explanation of not only how to uninstall apps, but how they get installed in the first place. Being a geek with a big Windows background, I'd never seen such a simple paradigm before.

And that's the standard way you install apps on the Mac. What you see on the desktop is a virtual disk, kind of like you'd inserted a CD in your computer. All you have to do is drag the app from the virtual disk to your Applications folder, then eject the virtual disk. This way, installing applications from the Internet is exactly the same as installing them from an actual disk - it's just drag and drop, then eject.
