So I want to save the new macworld keynote as a video that I can watch anytime without needing to be online, but when I try to save it, it alway saves as a reference movie. Is there a way I can download this or is this intended by apple and is illegal?

It's not illegal, but Apple doesn't want you to save it, so they've used some sort of DRM in Quicktime to disallow saving.

Hmm.... I saved mine today. I clicked the little arrow on the right side of the QT window, and it said "save as quicketime movie." Maybe its because I have QT Pro? I also went to the video via a direct URL, and not by clicking the link on apple.com.

Some sort of DRM? Its a stream. You cant save a stream into a file.

The movie in this http://stream.qtv.apple.com/events/j...25_350_ref.mov link is referencing to the stream.

I understand it's a stream; I still should be able to save the stream to a file. Quicktime is using digital restrictions to prevent me from doing so; that's DRM in my book.

Yes, I think it is because you have Pro.

You saved the link to the stream. Look at the file size, it's less than a kilobyte.

I have QT Pro, are you saving it as a reference file? That requires you to connect to the internet in order to view it.

I'm surprised they don't have a podcast of it.

That is incorrect. The correct answer is that you can not save streaming video with Quicktime Pro.

Quicktime is using digital restrictions to prevent me from doing so; that's DRM in my book.
Just because a motorbike looks like a bicycle doesn't make it one, nor is it correct to call it that.

You can not save the stream. You can save the reference movie which points to the stream on the streaming server. You can do this if...

1. you have QuickTime Pro

and

2. The author of the reference movie has not disabled the possibility of saving the file (thats what you call DRM).
