Thought I post a link to some tests I did between Apple Compressor v2.3 and a high-end software encoder as I was interested to know where my FCS DVDs sat in terms of quality.

Interested to hear of anyone's experiences in getting the best from Apple's Compressor.

If you're going to do a codec comparison, you should post losslessly compressed (PNG is a good option) screenshots from the source material as well as the output files.

We the viewer have no idea how good or bad the DV source was, nor any idea what quality reduction was caused by the JPEG compression rather than the MPEG compression.

Yep good points...and all rectified. I have now posted the PNG crops and also the original PAL DV QT crops to compare with source material.

I had all the PNGs but mistakenly misread that my crops were 600-700k each (!)...whereas in fact it was the whole QT window grabs that too big, so elected JPG as compromise. JPG now gone!

Thanks for the update.

I hope my first reply didn't come across too negative. It's a good bit of information for all of us interested in compression, but it's hard to tell what it means when we don't know where the quality losses are.
