I thought I would make a thread for the top 3 QuickTime Add-Ons since there are so many.

Here is my list:
1. Flip 4 Mac
2. Divx (I am pretty sure this unlocks some plug-ins)
3. On 2's

No you dont need the player installed. It is the DivX plugin.

What about the DiVx encoder and decoder that are in the QuickTime folder? Are those put there by Perian? Or do you need to keep those?

I'm fairly positive that perian only installs decoders for Quicktime.

I will have to use it more often to see how good it is. For example, if it can play those "awkward" movies.

Perian looks really interesting. Stay tuned. I've been pretty pleased with 3ivx/Flip4Mac
but I'm all for something that brings in the new and wipes away the old.

The best add-on is VLC. Quicktime still can't play many .avi and .mp4 files. VLC can. VLC has it all over Quicktime.
Yes, I know I could buy a PC, but why?

VLC is a separate application, not an add-on. Perian and Flip4Mac should cover you for QuickTime add-ons (the topic the OP was asking about).

Perian is awesome. Totally recommended. For me:

1) Perian
2) Flip4Mac
3) 5.1 Audio Decoder.

Why does 5.1 Audio do?

Just wanted to put in a vote for the Xiph components. There's not a whole lot of Vorbis out there, but sometimes you do come across it.

Oh, and for the record: Perian only installs decoders for DivX, 3ivX and XviD, no encoders.

Wow, I did not know that?

Perlan does not solve all problems. There are way too many files that quicktime can't play with plug-ins. My point is that VLC and Mplayer are much better than Quicktime at playing back a wide variety of files.

The 5.1 AC3 audio decoder plays sounds from a lot of files that normally dont play.

Do you suggest installing both Perian and Xiph?

p.s. do people check all the boxes in MIME Settings or do you use Default settings?
