merge Mail.app ~/Library/Mail directories from diff accounts?

I have two user accounts on my computer, x1 and x2, each of which has Mail.app setup to access a different IMAP mail account, x1@imap.mail1.com, and x2@imap.mail2.com, respectively. In addition to synching with their respective IMAP servers, each account also has locally-stored archived mail.

I'd now like to access both mail accounts from a single user-login, say x1. Can anyone offer any advice as to how to do this? I don't think it's as simple as merging the ~/Library/Mail directories from x1 and x2; i also tried copying the x2@imap.mail2.com DIRECTORY from inside /Users/x2/Library/Mail into /Users/x1/Library/Mail, but when I restarted Mail.app from within x1, it didn't recognize the x2 mail account.

Any ideas?
