I have a 1.2GHz iBook 12" (PowerPC) with 1256MB of RAM, iTunes 7.0.2 and QuickTime Pro 7.1.3. When I download TV shows from iTMS, I try playing them back both within iTunes itself and within the QuickTime player, and in either case the video is unacceptably choppy to the point of not being watchable.

Why does this happen? Are there any tweaks I should try? I have tried transfering the films to my new Intel-based iMac, and that definitely improves playback, so I wonder if it's simply a matter of outdated hardware on the iBook. But if that's true, well, I mean jeez....

EDIT: I hear that it is possible to view protected iTunes mp4 files with VLC if you "have the user keys" or "system keys" --- what does that mean? I wonder if using VLC in place of QT Player or iTunes would smooth out the playback.

ANOTHER EDIT: I found that selecting the option to "play in separate window" under the Advanced tab of iTunes' preferences eliminates nearly all of the herky-jerkies! Wow. Maybe this should become a sticky.
