I thought this would be fun. I use a folder called "3rdPartyApps", inside of the usual /Applications folder, to store all my non-Apple apps. Below is a screenshot of the folder, with my comments. I'd be curious to see others!

That's a pretty cool idea...is there any particular reason that you don't put the apple apps in there too?

He said that was his Third Party Applications folder.

Yeah, I saw that. I was just curious if he organized his apple apps in a similar fashion

I put an Applications folder in my home directory to hold the third party apps that do not have to be for the whole system. I then set subdirectories to handle different categories. I then put shortcuts to the subdirectories in the sidebar. Works very well.

Very likely it would break software update -- Apple updaters often don't find Apple applications unless they're directly where they've been installed under /Applications.

I never used to do it, either, until I saw this thread. Commenting on what the apps are actually there for made me realise I have quite a few that serve the same purpose.

Probably the same stuff that's in Mithras' "steal" folder. I really do wonder what's in his "tweak" folder, though.

*cough* I don't know what you mean.
The "tweak" folder is nothing exciting, just hardware-related utilities like SMARTReporter and the SMC fan controller scripts.

We need a little utility that will produce a clickable imagemap of the folder -- that'd be spiffy!

To go further into this, iWork is installed into /Applications/iWork and Software Update doesn't find them if they're not in their iWork folder.
It's best to leave Apple applications where Apple puts them.

I'll post a screenshot of my applications folder when I get home. I do not have any special sorting though. All of my apps are just copied into there. I use Spotlight to open apps, so I am hardly ever looking in the Applications folder, thus no organization.

Incidentally, red rocket, how did you capture the screenshot? I used Mondomouse to resize the window to be very big, then snapped a window-screenshot. I imagine you did something different?

You guys are application whores!

It is a wonder you get any work done. I run a very lean ship on my Macs: if I find an application that I don't use very often or at all, it gets the boot without hesitation. Personally, I almost NEVER use the applications folder because my most-used apps are in the Dock. Only rarely to I need to launch some utility that I do not find useful to keep in the dock or the wayward application that doesn't deserve a reserved spot in the dock.

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

How big is your dock, then?

To be honest, the only reason I have so many apps is because I'm not sure if the MacHeist guys will close down the site eventually (so if I need something that they gave away, I'm sorta SOL). Not to mention it seems like any time I delete one of those need-to-use-once-in-a-blue-moon apps, I need to use them mere days later, and redownloading them is a pain.

Each app on average only takes up a few dozen MB anyway, so I'm not exactly wasting precious HDD space.

Yeah, I took six separate full screen shots, trimmed and stitched them together in GraphicConverter. Guess my screen's too small.

Here is a lot of other 3rd party software I use constantly, but haven't included above because it's not technically in "application" format:

Honestly, I don't know what I'd do without Services, especially. IMO, they're one of the most useful, yet (usually) unadvertised, parts of OS X.
