My original HD is dying (I'm pretty sure). I unhooked my second drive and booted up just to make sure, and the awful squeaking sound continued, along with moments of some sort of grinding.....yikes.

I'm amazed I'm still able to use it.

I searched for about 10 minutes online (my tolerance) and I had found little to no useful information.

I am running 10.3.9, on a 733 G4.

I wish to copy my entire HD (around 30 gigs) to my ample second drive, but I also want to boot off of the second drive and unhook the first drive to see if maybe this sound is a fan or something (or a gremlin)

Of course if the drive was making the sound, I'd sh!tcan it and buy a new one asap, so I'd then need to move the installation and all data back to the new drive.

I lost my 10.3 discs, I lost my 10.2 disks....I'd have to revert back to 10.1 (or piracy) if this process isn't easy. Not to mention I'd miss a few apps that my 3D modeling teacher let me <cough> borrow, like Lightwave.

I'm assuming you don't want to do a Disk Utility Restore or use a third party app like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. That's the way to do it. If you're really concerned the drive will fail, I guess Data Rescue X is the other choice.

SuperDuper! is Super!

You can also make a full clone without paying for it... scheduled copies are only available with the paid version. It's an awesome app.

Before you do a clone, which is the way to go, you may want to first manually copy, drag your data to a separate folder on the new drive. Cloning ops are quite disk intensive, I'd be worried that this place to much strain on your ailing drive, so first backup your data.

Thanks dudes, I'm at work, but once I get home I'm gonna fire up SuperDuper.

I'll let you know how it goes (or maybe not )

I already backed up all my photos, so that was basically it. I just don't want to go through the trouble of installing everything again.

Any ideas of how long this will likely take?
