New Mini, first time with OS X (I have 10.4). Browser is Safari.
At Microsoft.com, I clicked on the "Download Now" button for WMP 9 for Mac OS X. I got a file called Windows Media.sitx downloaded onto my computer, with an icon on the desktop. I double-clicked the icon... and got a box that told me something like: can't find the right application for this file, click here to choose an application. I clicked, and the box that opened seemed to point me towards Script Editor, so I chose it.
Then I'm told, "Unable to read the dictionary of the application or extension because it is not scriptable." I click OK and am told "The document 'Windows Media.sitx' could not be opened. Script Editor cannot open files in the 'Script Editor Document' format."
Even after I trashed the Windows Media doc and downloaded it again, it continues to try to open it in Script Editor with the same result.
A little vague and rambling, I know - not much good with the jargon. Thanks, folks.

You don't need WMP for OSX. You can get Flip4Mac for free-- a Quicktime plugin that enables Windows Media formats. Although AVIs don't work that well on my Mac mini (but work fine on my iBook). There's other free plugins for Quicktime that serve a similar function.

WMP is discontinued, which is good because it sucked donkey balls.
Get Flip4Mac, which does the same thing far more elegantly and is officially distributed for free by Microsoft, here:

note: the ".sitx" or ".sit" files should be dying out, but every once in a while, you'll still find one. Those are compressed archives, much like the familiar ".zip" files, but in "StuffIt" format.
You can get StuffIt Expander for free should you run into that format again sometime - search this forum for a download link.

Man, I can't keep up with this stuff.
I downloaded and installed Flip4Mac... thanks for the tips.
But when I try to play the video clips I wanted to ( http://tv.icac.org.hk/eng/drama/), a "Video/Audio Playback" window opens, and then a box with this message:
Safari cannot find the Internet plug-in.
The page “Video/Audio Playback” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”, but you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/MediaPlayer/
<<Shrug>>. Are these videos protected so you have to have WMP to view them?
In case you're curious, those are Hong Kong TV drama series about (and sponsored by) the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). I love the internet. Except when I can't get it to work right.

Worked fine for me in Firefox with Flip4Mac. Have you restarted Safari since installing Flip4Mac?

Yes, it works fine for me also. Make sure you quit Safari and relaunch.

Flip4mac is quality. I hope we never have to pay for it.
