Entourage versus Mail

I am currently using Entourage. After a corrupt file and major loss of information (not backed up ), I am thinking about switching over to Mail.
What I like about Entourage:
When new mail comes in, a notification box fades in and then out with the topline details, regardless of which Application I am using. That way if I am in another application, say Safari, I don't have to go into Entourage to see who sent mail.
Entourage used to be the only program that synched with Blackberry, but I believe Mail does now too.
What do you like or dislike about Entourage and Mail?

With Mail, there is a Growl plugin that allows you to see who sent you a message and even the first part of it if needed.

Install Growl from Macupdate or Versiontracker and select GrowlMail under Growl in system preferences. It works great!

Funny thing...I'm a recent (13 months ago) convert to mac and have loved my new computer ever since. I think it took about 9 months before I had a program freeze on me. Know which program it was? Microsoft Word. Since then, I've tried to stay away from the office programs. So you can probably guess which mail app I prefer.

I downloaded Growl - it is great. It now works with my Google Notifier.
I don't see Mail as an application that Growl works with.
Here are a couple of other things that Entourage does and I am wondering if Mail does too:
1. When I receive mail with a pdf attachment, Entourage shows the actual body of the pdf in the Preview Screen.
2. Entourage has a Memo Pad, which I could synch with my Blackberry.
After my last experience with the Microsoft help desk, I would like to avoid Office if possible.
Thanks.

I have Growl working with Mail.app. I think the Mail.app plugin in in the Growl Extras folder...been a while since I installed it though. Also a great Growl plug for iTunes in there...

Or try mail.appetizer.
Really, instant mail notification is the devil, though. You should be hiding all notification, and checking your email every 30 or 60 minutes -- otherwise, you're letting the email run your life, instead of you.

Still lots of things you can do with an email client that you can't with any proprietary web service.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!
I like Gmail, but it seems slow compared to Entourage or Mail. Also, no Preview pane.
I agree that instant mail notification is the devil, but that way I could go surfing while at work and not miss anything.
cgc - I'm not sure what you mean by the Growl Extras Folder.
