My icons used to look normal--like a little sheet of paper. Now, however, they are little short gray things, and some are bigger than others. I did download an update for Word last week, and it seems like everytime I open a document it changes to this weird icon.

I just want to make sure this isn't symptomatic of a virus or some other weird problem....my whole freakin' dissertation is on this computer (backed up, too, of course--but still!). Thanks in advance...

I'm usually the one asking for help not giving advice—however, the very same thing happened to me a while back, only with .avi files.

In my case it had to do with the "Open with..." setting. To fix it I hit ctrl/i (for file info) clicked the "Open with..." option and selected the appropriate default application.

Or, it could be your extensions have changed. I dunno.

OMG. I just selected one file and hit ctrl+i and they ALL changed back to normal. How weird!

Thanks for your idea--I don't know why it worked, but I'm glad it did!
