I downloaded and installed Intego's trial version Antivirus and Netbarrier (its firewall app).

[The machine was a Quicksilver Mac running 10.3.x]

The trial version of the Antivirus identified a MS Windows virus (from a PC file I had been sent) but, as has been noted elsewhere, the trial version does not actually delete or repair the infected file.

Both app's seemed to be pretty decent, and the antivirus component had identified a virus that I already suspected was there.

Intego sells a bundle of Antivirus, Firewall, and a Spam Filter which saves some money over buying the app's separately. So I was going to buy the bundle.

I decided (the start of my ordeal) to uninstall the two trial versions before buying and downloading the paid versions.

And that's where my troubles began.

After the uninstall of the two Intego applications, I rebooted the Mac and found that it would no longer run off the original hard drive, it fell over to an older version of OS X I had on a separate hard drive.

So I ran out and bought the latest version of DiskWarrior (for about $100) and it agreed that the primary HD had serious problems but was unable to fix them. One could "see" the HD and its files but it ran very very slowly and some files and folders were completely unaccessible.

I tried various utilities to fix permissions etc. All to no avail. They all could see the drive and all agreed that it had problems but nothing they could fix.

We had been pretty good about running backups of our creative work so all was not lost... But I need to get this machine back up and running. So I went an bought a replacement IDE 250 GB drive at Best Buy ($104 with tax) and a full version of OS X Tiger at the Apple store (another $134) and gave the machine a memory transplant.

Today, after about 6 hours of work and $334 I have the machine back in reasonable shape. But I am not too pleased with the Intego folks. It may just be an awful coincidence but it does look as if the uninstalling of their trial versions caused my rather expensive two-day headache.

I still need to get some antivirus software on this Mac but I don't think I will be using Intego's.
