can't import mailboxes - please help

	Hi, I've just updated my ibook G4 from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8 and I can't import my mail boxes. I backed them up by dragging them from mail to an external hd. They had a .mbox extension and an icon to match. Now, however, their icons have turned into folder icons minus the .mbox extension and I can't import them into mail! Can anybody advise? Thanks.
