I need to run a program on my g4 (running osx) and it keeps telling me that I need to install os9 classic first. I can't seem to find a link to a download for it. How can I get ahold of the software so I can run this program?

You'll find Classic on your installation CD/DVD that came with your Mac. If it came with multiple disks, it's almost certainly on one of the later disks.

The reason you won't find a download link is this: Classic is actually a full-version of Mac OS 9 running side-by-side with OS X, allowing you to use older programs that never received an OS X update without having to restart your computer. Needless to say, Apple would rather not post a free copy of OS 9 on the internet (though I'm not entirely sure why: they offer downloads of every system up through 7.5.5, but none later than this).

Oh, and out of curiosity: what program do you need classic for?

I wouldn't be surprised if OS 9 went up for free download sometime soon - after all, 7.5.3 went up only three years after its release, and we're well past that point for OS 9.

It would sure be handy for emulation purposes, since SheepShaver is so picky about what version of the OS you have to have - it's gotta be 9.0.4, because 9.1 and above don't work.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
