I know there have been many posts about sharing iTunes over the Internet, and after searching here for a bit, I thought I'd see if anyone has any new suggestions worth trying to allow iTunes access to my NAS w/ iTunes server when I'm off network.
I saw this link, which seems to have some options from a while ago. I can share through Slimserver, but of course the iTunes sharing interface is quite nice. I'm only trying to access my music at home that won't fit on my MBP. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

you can use DOT-TUNES to share quite easily but it's not through iTunes, it has it's own interface.

Before you do any of this, I'd try to simply connect to your home computer over AFP, Samba, or NFS, and see if you can actually play a song from your remote computer without it skipping. Many ISPs severely cap upload bandwidth, making it impossible to stream a song without it skipping and yakking. If it is going to skip and yak, it is not worth your time.

Cool, I've never seen a skipping yak. Who knew they could do that?

Thanks, besson3c. I reliably stream now using slimserver, and I can streem Apple Lossless files just fine, as the upload connection averages about 1Mbps over my cable. It's too bad that you can't remotely connect to at least one machine.
Dork, that was great

Well, one thing you can do then is to connect to your home machine via AFP/NFS/Samba, and point your iTunes music folder to:
/Volumes/yourusername/Users/yourusername/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
This worked for me last I tried it, although it was a while ago...

Hmm, this didn't seem to work for me. iTunes just said updating library for a few seconds and then it showed the blank library. Does anyone do this?

I haven't tried this yet, but I think besson3c's way will work if you hold down the Shift key (Win) or Option key (Mac) and then launch iTunes. You'll get a prompt to choose a new library file. Select the one that's on your remote volume and you should be good to go.

A better way (IMHO) is what I do with my iBook.
I've replaced the iTunes folder with a alias that points to my iTunes network on my home computer.
Just an option.

iTunes network? You mean music stored on a different machine? How do you connect to this computer?

Have you tried the Rendezvous Proxy trick in the thread you linked to ? I do it myself with Network Beacon, that's pretty much the only solution that will have your internet share appear in iTunes just as any other local machine.
