First off, hello am new here and to macs, Someone gave me an imac and it is pretty awesome, plus windows/ms is pissing me off so it could not have come at a better time.
Anyways, one thing i see is that anywhere i click on a word I get the google search, this happens in yahoo, safari and Firefox which i'm using now.
The problem is, I hate google and everything it stands for. I hate seeing that it has invaded even apple.
My question: How do I get rid of it or change it to something else?
Anyways, glad to be a mac user now! What is funny is vista totally stole everything from apple even the way files are group using the clear box instead of dotted line lol.

If your preferred search engine in your default web browser isn't Google, the "Search in Google" option can be used to search with your preferred search engine. Even though it says "Google," it really means "Search the Internet with my preferred search engine." So, if, for example, you've set Yahoo as your search engine in Safari (assuming it's your default browser), and you highlight a word in TextEdit and then use the contextual menu command to "Search in Google," Safari will open and the search will be done with Yahoo. It's actually a nice extra feature of Mac OS X since it lets you search the Internet for search terms in documents in non-Internet programs. Of course, you have to be connected to the Internet when you use the option for it to work correctly.

PS - If you want to change the default search engine in Safari to something other than Google, download AcidSearch. It's a free plugin. I wrote a short review of it in one of my ezines and you can read it here:

It's a terrific little program.

OS X does not let you change the "preferred search engine". Safari and the service in the contextual menu always use Google. Claire must have used a third party hack to change the behavior.

With Firefox, you can get other search plugins to use. I use Scroogle most of the time. It uses the Google search engine, but does not do advertising and does not save details about visitors forever the way Google does.

I used AcidSearch to change the default search engine in Safari and, since Safari is my default browser, that changed the search engine for the contextual menu. AcidSearch doesn't "hack" the system, but it does let you alter some of Safari's features. Changing the default search engine in another browser may not affect the contextual menu's search engine - I haven't tested that since I prefer using Safari. So, to change the function, use AcidSearch and Safari.
