how to trim video files

I've got some videos that have a black border on the top and bottom. is there anyway I can trim these borders off?

If you can import it into iMovie, you could try the following Crop plug-in:

Stupendous Software iMovie Plugins Crop

N.B. I haven't used it myself, so can't comment on how well it works.

Not without taking a quality hit and a lot of time to reencode.

If they're causing playback problems, like a 16:9 video with borders to make it 4:3 that makes it too small on a widescreen display, VLC can crop the playback so it takes the entire screen (video menu->crop or the 'c' key).

Actually this is quite easy using a mask. It's nicely detailed here. There are even some sample masks to help you along.

that is exactly what I wanted. works perfectly. thanks a lot. too bad I already watched the first five seasons of The Sopranos not in widescreen. oh well..
