Hi all,

Sorry not sure what section is most appropriate for this question as I know so little about this type of solution.

I am just hoping for some good info and maybe some examples.

Basically an agency I work with have said they use an 'image server' to speed up their process in DTP.

Having never heard of or used this before I have tried to get some info but am not really getting anything solid and im not in a position to exploit the agencies current setup. I belive this is a server based application and the best info I have is OPI (Open Prepress interface) which in a nutshell speeds up the running of DTP (quark/indesign) buy providing the user with lo res bitmaps until output when the hi res is automatically replaced.

I hope to have a tinker with a system like this myself soon however I find myself at a deadend.

Any info or help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hamsher

OPI is more or less defunct nowadays.

Computers are far more powerful and networks are far faster than they used to be, effectively eliminating the need for OPI systems. Throw transparency effects into the mix and OPI even becomes a hazard (InDesign needs the high-res images to flatten transparency for printing)!

I'm sure that some OPI systems still exist and quite possibly some of them work with transparency, but the cost of installation and administration of such a system outweighs any benefits for most uses these days.
