For some reason, although I can select portions of my movies with QTPro, I am never offered the option to cut, paste, or trim to selection. Why? This is driving me crazy.

Sounds like something's screwed up then. Does it even show the in and out points when you click below the triangle on the timeline? Is it possible that you don't have Pro enabled? (Are you using a different account perhaps?)

Yep. In, out, and playhead. But can't cut or paste.

It says "QuickTime Pro" in the Preferences.

Don't think so. Mine is the only admin account.

There is a "no copy" flag that can be enabled in Quicktime movies (it might be for trailers etc.). Try exporting it, if it has the flag enabled it should give an error (though I don't remember the exact wording if it).

Having the same problem...
And I am a registered owner of Quicktime Pro. Using Quicktime Player 7.1.5 and trying to edit an MPEG Movie file but sure enough, Trim To Selection is greyed out, along with any other function I could think of to achieve my goal.
Very frustrating that there was nothing in Quicktime Help, nothing at Apple support, and very little else I could find online about this.

QT can't edit MPEG1 and 2 files (hence Big Mac's first post here).
MPEG StreamClip is very good at it though. Barring that, your only option is to re-encode it to mov and edit that.
