Yes.
Yahoo, AIM, and MSN (if you use aMSN or Mercury Messenger) can all communicate with your windows buddies.

It's the APPLICATION, not the hardware that decides whether or not to communicate with other systems. And iChat DOES work with many of the other chat programs (I don't know of one it doesn't work with, but I don't mess with chat much).

ghporter: well, it definitely doesn't work with MSN, Yahoo, MySpace, Google Talk, etc... but then it doesn't work with all but one of those in just text either.

Catfish, are you saying iChat doesn't work with Yahoo Messenger? I have used it with YM myself... Or are you saying the video chat doesn't work with those...? It was my impression that iChat DID work with "most" chat programs, with AIM as an exception. Was I that wrong or am I misunderstanding you?

Out of the box iChat only works with AIM. I think you might have it the wrong way around.

iChat AV can videoconference with AIM 5.9 and Trillian Pro users on Windows.

Since iChat supports Jabber you can do text messaging with Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk.

IMO, the AIM side of a video chat is rather poor quality

Only if there's a Jabber server somewhere. Not right out of the box, and not directly.

If you are interested in cross-platform chats, Skype works best IMHO. Yahoo video chats are an embarrassment (I got around 1 fps or so and I was told it's not a Mac issue).

iChat has the best quality with a good connection, but Skype isn't bad either.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

It works "out of the box" (meaning: there is no other software required). It doesn't work directly since it requires a Jabber-server, but there is always one somewhere.
