A friend gets on my Mac, asks if she could download her pics from her Hotmail and put 'em in iPhoto. Doesn't work. Even if I download the attachment (jpg file) from her Hotmail on my desktop Preview can't even open it (unrecognizable or corrupted). And the extension shows .jpg.

So I tried a jpg file from my Hotmail to the desktop. No prob. Picture perfect.

Seems to be a discrepancy between Windows Hotmail attachments and Mac.

What's going on? How can I get her Windows Hotmail pics to work? Is this a Microsoft trick, or something?

Looks like I'll have to convert her pics some way. Is there an app for this?

...or it could simply be that the jpeg is corrupted, or it has been mis-labelled as a jpg when it isn't one? A .jpg is not platform specific.

You can try to force Preview to open the file by command-option-dragging it to the Preview icon in the Dock.
