I am very new to macs and I cannot figure out how to burn a data CD with Itunes. Can someone please help me out. I have a mbp by the way. I want to copy some software that I have onto a cd and keep my original copy from getting scratched.

Pro Tip™: iTunes is not a manager for software.

Have you ever made use of the Help menu in the Finder? Now might be a good time.

File->Back Up to Disc

or

iTunes->Preferences->Advanced->Burning->Data CD or DVD
then click the burn button in the bottom right of the main window when you are in a playlist to burn that playlist as data CD.

Where did you get the idea that iTunes duplicates arbitrary data CDs? It's called iTunes for a reason. Instead use Disk Utility.

Best not to use iTunes at all for this.

For normal files, go to File->New Burn Folder

Drag in your contents, and click burn. OS X will prompt you for a CD/DVD. Stick one in.

For discs, use the FAQ above.
