Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum, and i joined primarily for help on my current dilema, but i like this forum soo far, so you may be seeing alot of me
Recently apple released a new quicktime update (QT 7.1.5) Soo I went to install it (just like any user does) ONE problem is, in the middle of installation... my computer froze ... so now, quicktime has a corrupt or incomplete installation. This means QT 7.1.3 doesn't work, and QT 7.1.5 doesn't work, NEITHER of them are functioning :o... Now normally this would not be a very big deal, I could just uninstall quicktime, then re-install a fresh brand new quicktime 7.0. BUT this is not a perfect world meaning it's not that simple, see when i go to un-install quicktime, my computer freezes ... OR when i go to install a non-corrupt QT.... you guessed it, my computer freezes. IN other words I can't do ANYTHING with quicktime.
NOW don't be alarmed the rest of my system is running top-notch, no errors or anything just the lack of quicktime is annoying and I'd like to fix it.
Now here comes an additional problem I've ran into, a friend of mine suggested I dust off my good old OS X disks, and start-up off of the disk, then go to disk utility and repair my HD volume. So I go to do this, I get to disk utility, and I click verify disk. I get a message saying "Error (-9972) cannot verify because an underlying error occured, please repair your disk" So I click Repair disk I get this message "Error (-9972) cannot repair because an underlying error occured."
So now can you guy's see the pickle I'm in? PLEASE give me any advice, right now, the only thing i can think of is to reformat my harddrive, and Re-install OS X, but I REALLY don't wanna do that.
JUST FYI, I'll give u guy's some info on my mac.
it's a iMac PowerPC G3, 400Mhz processor, 192MB SDRAM, and it's runnign Mac OS X 10.3.9
I apologize for the long read, so I'll summarize it for you in case ur lazy
summary
-quicktime froze in the middle of installation
-now quicktime doesn't work
-can't uninstall, or re-install it without my computer freezing
-Disk utility said it can't repair my volume, and an underlying error occured (-9972)

Well, number one, there's no need to reformat anything.
You can do an archive and install from OS X discs that will keep your data and reinstall the core system if it comes to that, but I think there's an easier solution still.
First of all, have you rebooted yet?

yes, I've rebooted SEVERAL times , it's been a problem for more then a week now
And well I'd love to be able to just archive and install a fresh copy i cn't really do that cause my harddrive is only 9.5Gb and I only got 3.8 Gb left... so since os x 10.3 is at least 3.5Gb I can't really do that, I MIGHT be able to, but idk.

Well, if you're going to do an archive install, you can use a localizer app to remove all the forign languages form your computer, and also delete all the extra printer drivers you won't need since you'll be replacing them - that should net you over a gig of free space.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this has nothing to do with QuickTime, other than your hard drive has a problem in a certain spot, and QuickTime happens to be located on that spot.
When I say your hard drive has a problem, it could be as minor as a corrupt directory structure (all software) or it could be a bad block (hardware failure). It doesn't sound like a hardware problem bad enough to nuke the whole drive (like one of the heads breaking off).
Anyway, as with all hard drive issues, your first step should be to make backups of your important data, somewhere off that hard drive. You should have these anyway, everyone should, but if your hard drive gives you any kind of problem, make them right away before you do anything else.
Next you have to find a way to repair your drive. If OS X's disk utility can't do it, try OS 9's. Of course, I find it easier to reformat the drive, once you've made your backups anyway, than to wade through all the hassle of disk repair apps. Also, start shopping for a new hard drive, just in case. You can get a great deal on something 5x bigger than your current drive...

Since you're on 10.3.9, I'd suggest reverting to QuickTime 6.5.2.
You can get it from here:
Apple QuickTime
I've had all sorts of woes with QT7.
