If it's H.264 it should play in QT without any other software. If not, try installing Divx.

Perian provides, among other things:
AVI support for: AAC, AC3 Audio using A52Codec, H.264, MPEG4, and VBR MP3
also list of QT components obsoleted by Perian

So you don't get the video, the audio, or both?

If it's just the audio, try running the file through DivX Doctor II - AVI to MOV Convertor

I just tried doctoring a couple of H.264 + MP3 files; the first threw up an error (and making an audio-only file), and the second produced just a white screen. I did notice that they had different fourccs though, the first had "H264" while the second had "h264". Either way, I'd suggest using Perian or converting to some other format like Xvid (if you're on pre-10.4).

VLC will play just about anything in the world (except WMV). I guess you were really asking for a codec and I hope what everyone else has recommended has worked for you but whenever I have anything that doesn't play in my usual players (Quicktime and Mplayer) VLC almost always faithfully works for me.

Sorry chabig- what happens is if I double click on it "QT has encountered an error in opening the file." But I know that it is not a corrupt file.
