Hi all, I'm on my first Intel Mac and I'm slowly bringing all my apps and programs over to Intel-native versions as I think Rosetta really eats my resources.
My one sore point today are the HP processes related to its drivers and software that are still PPC based. I've been waiting for HP to update their drivers but I doubt it will, so I'm looking for advice until I replace my HP printers with a brand with updated programs.
First, of the HP processes listed, what can I kill outright?
- hpusbmond
- Print Daemon
- HP IO Classic Proxy
- HP IO Classic Proxy 2
- HP IO Trapmonito
- hpdot4d
- HP Scanjet Manager
- HP Event Handler
Second, are there reliable ways to print to my two HP printers (inkjet, laser) without HP's software? I need scanner support into Photoshop, Preview etc, and printing set up for printing custom docs like photos. (paper type & size, scaling, bleed, etc)

What models? Most HP printers work out of the box with the preinstalled OS X drivers, no reason to go and install HP's at all (and those drivers include standard features like paper type, ink usage, etc).
The scanner is another story. The official list of universal drivers is rather short. Highly model dependent.

The printers are an HP 1610 all in one and a HP 1012.
The scanner is a 4570c.
Thanks for the info!

The Laserjet 1012 driver is included in OS X (as of 10.4.4). Ditto the PSC 1610. As for the 4570c, standard functionality may be available just through the OS (Apple helpfully doesn't include a list of scanners that work with its generic setup). If so, it'll work fine with Photoshop and Preview.
Since HP doesn't actually have universal drivers for any of these themselves, the easiest thing for you to do is uninstall HP's drivers/software (hopefully their installer has an uninstall option?) and see whether the devices do still work satisfactorily.

HP all in one's typically print with the built in OS X drivers, but will not scan.
My Epson, on the other hand, works out of the box with no extra drivers, including the scanner.

Which Epson do you have that doesn't require drivers, if I may ask?

I have same problem with Canon drivers for my CanoScan 8400F scanner. According to Canon they will not be updated since they work through Rosetta. They work but I don't want to run it via Rosetta...
